Turnend Tapes, on its second release, presents something very special in the form of a 4 track EP selected from the works of a true veteran, zedmeco. Better known as Zeno Messis, one part of the prolific Megalon project that painted the UK underground techno scene of the 90s. With a string of releases on Plink Plonk featuring the now cultish 94’ LP ‘Pandora’s Box’, Megalon’s mosaic of dance music was as much Ambient Dub as it was Detroit techno or Deep House remaining timeless and mythical.
Fast-forward 2 decades and then some. zedmeco quietly continues to transmit music of authenticity and nostalgia, inflected with the same elasticity to style and sound, integrating 20+ years of spirit and experience. ‘view from olympus: selected tracks’ is a culmination of just a fraction of Zed’s new output that we are ecstatic to have start our stamped series on the label.

Returning to Lisbon’s Light Channel Recordings, DJ Silver mines the rich seam of techno’s late-century flourishing into diverse forms – from stern 4/4 to reflective electro to gorgeous, cinematic ambient. ‘P World’ takes (and merits) the whole A-side: what starts as an unadorned piano solo unfurls into a mélange of sunburnt synth washes and hazy arpeggios, as if Detroit Escalator Co. went to the beach for a day. On the B, ‘Cell’ takes us on a nostalgic flight through Incunabula-era electro, here with a remarkable melodic lead line, while ‘Future Domination’ sheds the introspection and drops us straight into the ritual pressure of a packed techno floor. Helena returns with its 7th release, this time from Uruguayan alchemist Fede Lijtmaer.
Each of the three originals shows off his flair and musicality, be it the switch-up drum patterns and delicate keys of ‘Só Um Momento’, the more deliberate swagger of ‘Serendipia’ or the mutating synth line that weaves its aleatoric way through ‘Somewhere’ – everywhere shades of Steve Pickton, Casey Tucker, and other early UK proponents of the Detroit sound.
Finally, compatriot and friend Z@P remixes ‘Somewhere’, taking familiar but unexpected elements (Chicago house drums and Mathew Jonson synths) and turning them into something entirely modern.
